About Us
Escape Artist's Stef & Jeff Wager
We consider this the 'Reader's Digest' version of a much bigger story, but here's a glimpse of who we are.

Our Story

It is said - When you conspire, the universe conspires with you. This resonates with us. We are Stefani & Jeffrey Wager, and we started our homesteading journey in 2016, though we'd been dreaming and imagining it for much longer. Both of us on the heels of mis-matched relationships, neither expected to find the magic sparks of love. But who are we to argue when it smacks you over the head?
Jeff - When I got divorced in 2013, I didn't have much, and had recently quit my job. It was the first time in my life I didn't really have a direction. It was scary to feel like a 'man without a country' , so to speak. I could get a 'what-have-you' job, an apartment, etc - the script as I like to call it - or, I could make the break I fantasied about. I started a Tiny house project, and the concept for this show was born.
After a year, the tiny was still not live-able, but it had to move.
I had a short term solution for a spell, but that fizzled, and led to another short term place. That's when Stefani sparkled into my life. One of our first dates was a thrift store treasure hunting day....!! We were engaged within months (when you know, you know), and began our search for our own piece of land. We drove the state up and down, looking for something that spoke to us. That piece that fit our laundry list of requirements and was still affordable.
It was the bottom of the 9th, our landlord wanted a new contract and because Stefi had moved in to the tiny house with me, he wanted to charge us more. (My POV is that this was not a hotel, and he didn't have the right to charge a 'per occupant fee'!
Then it happened.
We found the piece of land that would become
THE VERMESA.
I cashed in what little money I had in a retirement account, paid the $3000 penalty for early withdrawal, and had a few good contracts that summer. We were close. We begged and borrowed, but by the skin of our teeth, bought 2.4 acres, without a mortgage. It had been a dig pit for gravel. It was covered in both industrial and household trash. Electric at the road, a drilled well (not tapped), and a 'free bonus house' - an older prefab that had been moved here, a small addition added, but never lived in on this property.
To our eyes, a gem in the rough.

Our goal is to meet up with other fascinating characters and have dialogs that are more than surface deep
and connect our audience with the wisdom and inspiration that they bring.
Thanks for checking it out!
